Agromet Advisory Unit, Thiruvananthapuram

The  Agricultural Meteorology Division of India Meteorological Department at Pune, caters to the needs of agriculturists and conducts research in the field of Agricultural Meteorology.

The  activities of this Division are aimed at lending support to agriculturists and planners by giving advance information relating to weather conditions for planning day to day agricultural operations, crop-yield forecast based on meteorological data, information relating to progress of monsoon, commencement of sowing rains, conducting studies on evapo-transpiration to know crop  water demand and on the effect of weather on plant pests and diseases. This division issues National level composite advisory bulletin, imparts training to personnel of State Agricultural  University etc. in maintenance of agromet observatories. Agricultural Universities have Agromet Field Units (AMFU) functioning with them.

The State Agromet Centres (SAMC) at IMD’s forecasting offices located at state capitals, provide district level weather forecast to AMFUs who will in turn issue crop & area specific advisories to farming community. The SAMCs prepare state composite bulletin based on the bulletins from these units and the bulletin from State  Agricultural Department. These bulletins are provided to State Agricultural Dept.& other functionaries and also disseminated through state level media. These SAMCs will also generate other technical inputs needed to cater to AAS and co-ordinate the services at state level.
